Heat pump repair for Jacksonville homes, cooling or heating

Heat pumps that won't heat, freeze up outside, stick in defrost or lean on expensive backup strips all night, diagnosed in both modes and priced before any repair.

Updated September 2026

Quick answer

Why is my heat pump blowing cold air in Jacksonville, FL?

A Jacksonville heat pump blowing cold air on heat mode is usually in its normal defrost cycle for a few minutes, or has a failed reversing valve, defrost control or low refrigerant charge. If cold air lasts more than about ten minutes, the system needs a diagnosis.

Warning signs

Signs your heat pump needs repair

Cold air on heat mode

Beyond a short defrost, often a reversing valve or charge problem.

Ice covering the outdoor coil

Light frost is normal; a solid block of ice isn't.

Steam and a whoosh outside

Normal defrost. Constant defrosting isn't.

Aux heat on all the time

Strips carrying the load, often a lockout setting or a weak heat pump.

Heats but won't cool

Reversing valve stuck in heat position.

Power bill spikes in January

Backup strips running instead of the heat pump.

Overview

Two jobs from one machine

A heat pump is an air conditioner that can run backward. A reversing valve flips the refrigerant flow so the outdoor coil gathers heat instead of rejecting it. That adds parts an AC doesn't have: the valve and its solenoid, a defrost control, and backup strips inside the air handler.

Most of the year a Jacksonville heat pump runs as an AC and fails like one. The heat-mode failures show up on the first cold mornings, when the valve, the defrost board or the aux heat settings get tested for the first time in months. We check the system in both modes so a repair in January doesn't leave a surprise for June.

What we fix

Heat pump not heating

If the air handler runs but the air is lukewarm, the heat pump may not be switching into heat mode, the charge may be low, or the outdoor unit may not be running at all. We check the reversing valve solenoid and the thermostat's changeover signal, then read pressures in heat mode. Low charge means a leak, and in heat mode a leak often shows up as poor heating before anyone notices it in cooling season. The backup strips are checked too, since they cover the gap when the heat pump can't.

Stuck in defrost or iced over

In heat mode the outdoor coil gets cold enough to frost, and the system periodically runs a defrost cycle to melt it. You'll see steam and hear a whoosh; that's normal. A coil encased in ice, or a unit that seems to defrost constantly, points to a failed defrost sensor or board, low charge, or an outdoor fan problem. We test the defrost control and sensor, confirm the fan and charge, and make sure the unit drains so meltwater doesn't refreeze around the base.

Reversing valve failure

When the valve sticks, the system heats in cooling mode or cools in heating mode, or can't fully shift and does neither well. Sometimes it's the solenoid coil or the thermostat wiring, which are simple fixes. If the valve itself is stuck or leaking internally, replacing it means recovering the refrigerant, brazing in a new valve, and recharging. On an older unit that's a big repair, and we'll price replacement alongside it so you can compare the two honestly before anything is ordered.

Timing

How long a heat pump repair takes

Defrost sensors, solenoid coils, capacitors and thermostat settings are usually handled in a single visit. A reversing valve replacement or a refrigerant leak repair takes longer because the charge must be recovered, the repair brazed and pressure tested, and the system recharged. We give you the timeline and any part lead time before starting.

Why heat pump problems surface on cold mornings

Heating design temperatures in Jacksonville sit around 27F to 32F, comfortably inside a standard heat pump's range, so a healthy system should carry the house on nearly every winter night without leaning on its strips. When the strips run constantly on a 40F morning, the heat pump isn't doing its share. That pattern usually means a failed defrost control, a low charge, or an aux heat lockout set too high, and it shows up in the power bill before it shows up as a cold house.

Cost factors

What affects the cost of a heat pump repair

  • The failed partSensors and capacitors cost far less than a reversing valve or compressor.
  • Refrigerant workLeak repair and recharge depend on refrigerant type and amount.
  • Mode testedSome faults only show in heat mode and take longer to confirm.
  • Backup stripsA failed strip or sequencer adds parts.
  • System ageOlder units may have costlier or harder-to-find parts.

Every heat pump repair is priced in writing after diagnosis.

FAQ

Heat pump repair questions

Is steam coming off my heat pump normal?

Yes, during defrost. Constant defrosting or solid ice isn't.

Why is aux heat always on?

Often a lockout setting, low charge or a weak heat pump. We find which.

My heat pump heats but won't cool. Why?

Usually a stuck reversing valve or a solenoid or wiring fault.

Can a heat pump heat when it's below freezing?

Yes. Jacksonville's cold nights are within a standard heat pump's range, with strips as backup.

Should I switch to emergency heat?

Only if the outdoor unit has failed. It runs the strips alone and costs more.

Is a reversing valve worth replacing?

On a newer system, often yes. On an older one, compare it with replacement.

Do you work on all heat pump brands?

Yes, including Trane, Carrier, Lennox, Rheem, Goodman and Daikin.
