AC compressor repair in Jacksonville when the outdoor unit won't start

Compressors that hum, trip breakers or won't start, tested electrically and mechanically before anyone says the word replacement.

Updated September 2026

Quick answer

Can an AC compressor be repaired in Jacksonville, FL?

Often the compressor itself isn't the problem. In Jacksonville many no-start calls are a failed capacitor, contactor or wiring fault that makes a healthy compressor look dead. If the compressor's windings are shorted or it's mechanically seized, it needs replacing, and on older systems a full replacement is usually better value.

Warning signs

Signs of a compressor problem

Outdoor unit hums but won't start

Often a failed capacitor, sometimes a locked compressor.

Breaker trips at startup

A shorted compressor or a hard-starting one drawing high current.

Fan runs, no cold air

The compressor isn't running while the fan does.

Loud clanking or grinding

Internal mechanical damage.

Unit shuts off after a few minutes

Overheating and tripping its internal protector.

Warm air and high bills

A weak compressor struggling to pump refrigerant.

Overview

Most dead compressors aren't dead

The compressor is the heart of the system and the most expensive part to replace, so it deserves careful diagnosis. A failed run capacitor, a burned contactor or a loose wire can all leave a perfectly good compressor sitting silent. We test those first.

Then we test the compressor itself: winding resistance, insulation to ground, amp draw on startup, and whether it's mechanically locked. That tells us whether the fix is a small part, a hard start kit, or a compressor that has truly failed. You get the answer in writing, with a replacement price alongside if the system is older.

What we fix

Compressor will not start

When the compressor hums and won't turn over, the usual culprit is the run capacitor that gives it the kick to start. Capacitors weaken in constant heat and are quick to replace. If the capacitor tests good, we check the contactor, the wiring and the compressor's internal overload, which can trip from overheating and reset after it cools. Only after those are ruled out do we look at a locked or failed compressor. A capacitor swap takes minutes when that's the fault, and we check the compressor's amp draw afterward to confirm it's starting cleanly.

Hard start kits

Some compressors, especially older ones, struggle to start against high pressure on hot afternoons. A hard start kit adds a boost at startup, helping the compressor get going and reducing the strain on it. It's a reasonable fix for a compressor that's electrically healthy but hard starting. It isn't a cure for a failing compressor, and we'll say so when the readings point that way. We measure the starting amps before and after fitting the kit, so you can see the difference it makes. If the compressor is drawing abnormally even with the kit, we'll tell you the compressor itself is on its way out.

Compressor replacement or a new system

A compressor with shorted windings or a seized mechanism has to be replaced. That means recovering the refrigerant, brazing in the new compressor, replacing the filter drier, pressure testing, evacuating and recharging. On a system under about ten years old with a good coil, that can be worth doing. On an older system, the same money often goes most of the way to a new matched system, so we price both side by side. Either way, nothing is ordered until you've seen both prices in writing.

How the job runs

How a compressor call runs

  1. 1

    Call

A dispatcher books the next open technician.

  2. 2

    Test the easy parts first

    Capacitor, contactor and wiring checked.

  3. 3

    Test the compressor

Windings, insulation, amps and mechanical lock.

  4. 4

    Written price

Repair and, on older systems, replacement side by side.

  5. 5

    Repair and verify

Part replaced and system tested until it's cooling.

Timing

How long a compressor repair takes

Capacitors, contactors and hard start kits are usually one visit. A compressor replacement depends on getting the correct compressor, then a full day of recovery, brazing, testing and recharging. We give you the timeline before ordering anything.

Compressors on coastal systems

On Amelia Island and around Fernandina Beach, salt air and humidity work on outdoor units faster than inland, corroding the coil, the cabinet and the electrical parts around the compressor. That matters when a compressor fails: putting a new compressor into a cabinet with a corroded coil can mean paying for a major repair on a unit whose next leak isn't far off. We inspect the coil before recommending any compressor work on a coastal system.

Cost factors

What affects the cost of a compressor repair

  • The actual failureA capacitor or contactor costs far less than a compressor.
  • Compressor size and typeSingle stage, two-stage and variable speed compressors differ in price.
  • RefrigerantReplacement requires recovery and a full recharge.
  • System ageParts for older systems can be costlier or harder to find.
  • Coil conditionA corroded coil can make compressor replacement poor value.

We price compressor work in writing after testing, with a replacement price alongside on older systems.

FAQ

Compressor questions

How do I know if my compressor is bad?

Testing tells. Humming without starting is often a capacitor, not the compressor.

What's a hard start kit?

A device that helps a hard-starting compressor get going on hot days.

Is compressor replacement worth it?

On newer systems with a good coil, often yes. On older ones, compare with a new system.

Can a bad capacitor ruin my compressor?

Running a compressor with a failing capacitor can overheat it. Turn the system off and call.

How long does a compressor replacement take?

About a day once the part is in hand.

Why does my breaker trip when the AC starts?

Often a shorted or hard-starting compressor. Leave the breaker off and call.

Which compressor brands do you work on?

All major brands, including Trane, Carrier, Lennox, Goodman, Rheem and Daikin.
